Today, June 8 is National Caribbean-American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Just about eight days ago on May 31, 2022, President Biden declared June 2022 as Caribbean-American Heritage Month highlighting the historical contribution the Caribbean people and their descendants have made to the United States of America (USA).
As we continue to raise HIV/AIDS awareness, it is important to bring to the forefront the growing community in Los Angeles County and the lack of resources, information, and services specifically for the Caribbean community. On the global scale, the Caribbean region has the second-highest HIV prevalence rate and the highest incident rate of reported AIDS cases in the Americas. These results show the need for more robust efforts to ensure information, resources, and services are accessible, available, and culturally appropriate.
On this note, I invite you to connect with HEALING with HOPE Corporation (a Faith-Based led organization that aims to provide HIV/STI prevention, treatment, care, and supportive information, resources, and services to the Faith and Caribbean Community in Los Angeles County and Beyond,) who will be leading the effort to provide the necessary information, resources, and services to the Caribbean community. This effort will hopefully lead to
timely diagnosis for HIV/STIs;
rapid treatment access;
reduce HIV/STIs transmission; and
reduce HIV related ignorance, stigma & discrimination.
We can achieve this if we work together and all support is welcome. If you are HIV/STIs service agency, please connect with us to be added to our resource list. You can learn more at www.healingwhope.org.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your support. as we galvanize to serve the Caribbean Community in Los Angeles County and Beyond.
I am
Damone Thomas
